DeSana Middle School Overview
DeSana Middle School is a public middle school within the Forsyth County Schools district in Alpharetta, GA. The school is relatively new to the area and opened in August of 2016. Over 1,200 students currently attend the school with most being from the South Forsyth portion of Alpharetta and Cumming, GA. The school’s colors are navy blue, white, and lime green and their mascot is a dragon.
Academic Summary
DeSana Middle School excels academically and currently ranks in the top 8% of all middle schools in Georgia. Their student-to-teacher ratio is relatively small at 18:1, allowing for more engaging classroom environments that help lead to student success.
Data from the U.S. News & World Report on DeSana Middle School shows that 61% of students met or exceeded the level of proficiency for Math and 62% met or exceeded proficiency levels for Reading.
DeSana Middle School History
DeSana Middle School is named after Jeanne and Jim DeSana who were individuals from the area that were passionate about helping children succeed and improving their community. Jim DeSana was an engineer for GM Motors, inventor, artist, and self-taught pianist. Jeanne DeSana was a genetic scientist for Emory University then, later, the State of Georgia.
Aside from their professional careers, they volunteered in Fulton County Schools in the Forsyth Central High School Drama Department. They were also on the Otwell Middle School Council, Partners in Education Committee, helped with the Fulton County District’s first strategic plan, and were founding members of the LEADER Program. They also developed a scholarship fund from their own personal savings in 1997 that has since provided over $250,000 in financial assistance to Forsyth County Schools seniors.
