Roswell Mill Waterfall at Old Mill Park
About Old Mill Park
Old Mill Park is a historic destination in Roswell featuring the Roswell Mill Waterfall and numerous pieces of history. This park is located in Downtown Roswell near Chattahoochee Nature Center and Bulloch Hall. Along the bank off the trail bordering Vickery Creek you can find historic Civil War ruins from the old Roswell Manufacturing Mills that were built in 1839 and 1853 and later destroyed by Union Forces in 1864.
The mill constructed in 1853 was rebuilt after its destruction, but later destroyed again by a fire in 1926. At the center of Old Mill Park lies the historic Roswell Mill Waterfall which was created when the creek was dammed to provide hydroelectric power, but now is a perfect spot to cool off during the Summer. The beautiful scenery also provides many local photographers a perfect backdrop to capture the rustic southern charm of Roswell.
The Roswell Mill Waterfall
The main attraction here is undoubtedly the Roswell Mill Waterfall.
While it looks natural, this waterfall is actually created by a historic dam. The dam was built to power the mills along Vickery Creek. Water spills over the 30-foot dam, creating a beautiful, wide curtain of water.
It is one of the most photographed spots in Georgia. You can view the waterfall from above on the trails or hike down to the creek bank for a closer look. Be careful near the water as the rocks are extremely slippery. Also, according to city rules, swimming is prohibited in Vickery Creek at this location.
Hiking at Old Mill Park
Old Mill Park connects directly to the Vickery Creek Trail system.
These trails are part of the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area. The hike is considered moderate in difficulty. The path winds through the forest, climbs wooden steps, and follows the creek.
One of the highlights of the trail is the Vickery Creek Covered Bridge. This pedestrian bridge spans the creek and offers a fantastic view of the water below. It connects the park to the trails on the other side of the river.
